I filed a dispute regarding inaccurate information on my credit report. What must a furnisher do when it gets a direct dispute?
Once the furnisher receives a direct dispute that is
- sent to the address provided by the furnisher for disputes, and that
- includes all of the required information,
it must
- conduct a reasonable investigation, generally within 30 days,
- review all relevant information provided with the dispute notice, and
- report the results of the investigation to the dispute filer.
If the furnisher's investigation finds that the information it reported was wrong, the furnisher must promptly notify each credit reporting agency that the information reported was wrong and must provide correct information.
Refer to 12 CFR 1022 "Fair Credit Reporting (Regulation V)" for more information.
